The Emotional Journey of a British Asian at New York Fashion Week

Being the first British Asian of Punjabi heritage to headline New York Fashion Week is an accomplishment that fills me with immense pride and joy. It’s been a long journey filled with highs and lows, doubts and fears, but I’ve finally arrived. But this wasn’t just about me; it was also about the stereotypes that are placed on all South Asians in the fashion world. And I’m determined to prove that we can make it when given the opportunity.

After my first few successful shows, I started to question why me? Why did I get the chance while so many other talented designers were overlooked? Then, eventually it hit me; my talent and creativity was what got me here. It had nothing to do with my skin color or heritage. But it made me realize how important it is for us to push back against stereotypes, both inside and outside of the fashion industry. We all have unique talents and perspectives that should be celebrated — not ignored because of our backgrounds or ethnicities.

I hope my success will help inspire South Asians around the world who have creative aspirations but don’t think they have a chance at making their dreams come true. I want them to know that having a good heart, work ethic, passion for learning, and creativity will give you the tools you need to succeed in life — even if you face challenges along the way. It may take time, but if you keep pushing forward you can accomplish anything you set your mind to!

Being part of New York Fashion Week as a British Asian has been an emotional journey full of hard work and dedication. My success has proved that talent is more important than any kind of prejudice or discrimination we might face in our lives. Through my story, I hope to encourage others not to let their dreams be limited by expectations or stereotypes — trust yourself and go out into the world with courage! With determination, passion and hard work we can all succeed in whatever field we choose!
